This painting is an ode to the multidimensionality of human emotion, the unseen feelings and stories that we carry, and the subtle shifts in mood that color can elicit within us. In this piece, I use a grid composition to deconstruct a single portrait into distinct color fields. Each block of the grid is rendered with a different color tone, and calls in a different emotional frequency. “Breakthrough” is part of my ongoing exploration of identity, connection, and the unspoken. It reinforces the idea that emotional truth doesn’t always reside on the surface, and that color itself can be a language for expressing the complexity of being.

In creating this painting, I went through my own personal exploration of emotional masking and the internal contradictions that arise when navigating overwhelming feelings. In the early days of my move to New York City, I found myself answering the frequently asked question of “how are you?” very superficially. There were several moments where I found myself feeling overwhelmed, unsure, and unable to truly articulate the many feelings that came with navigating a new phase of life. However, I would ultimately just answer the question by saying “fine”. This piece is an ode to masking the tension between my internal reality and external presentation – between the truth of feeling “all over the place” and the socially expected response of being “fine.”
This painting is a continuation of my ongoing exploration of the multidimensional self, and multiplicity in unity.

In this painting, I explore how we as humans often experience duality in our emotions and perceptions. The two facial figures in this piece are essentially “two sides of the same coin” – both literally (e.g. each face is on its own individual canvas), and figuratively. By using contrasting profiles, I aim to externalize the tension between how we are seen, how we see others, and how we see ourselves.

This painting was my first attempt at visualizing the concept of multiplicity within unity—how many distinct and independent parts come together to form something whole. By isolating and compartmentalizing each facial feature (and painting them with individual attention), I emphasize the autonomy and unique significance of each element. At the same time, these components are geometrically bound together, forming a face that is both cohesive and fragmented. Even in our disjointedness, there is unity.
This piece continues my exploration of the tension between categorization and complexity, and affirms my belief that identity can’t be found in simplification. Every part of ourselves is essential to the whole.
