ARTIST STATEMENT

The human brain loves to simplify the world around us, organizing people and experiences into rigid categories that rarely capture the truth of who we are. My work challenges this tendency by exploring the complexity of identity. We are all made of layers — emotional, ancestral, cultural, and spiritual — that interact and shift over time. At the same time, these layers are never isolated. They are shaped in dialogue with the world around us, through our environments, histories, and shared human experiences. No being is truly isolated or singular, and no one’s identity is one-dimensional.

I use oil and acrylic paint to highlight the multidimensionality and interconnectivity of human beings. Fragmented facial planes, multiple gazes, and the fusion of natural elements with human forms invite viewers to see beyond the surface. These visual metaphors reflect the many versions of ourselves that live within us, and the threads that bind us to one another. This thematic exploration stems from my own journey of embracing my multidimensionality as a Black woman — resisting conformity, honoring complexity, and offering all of who I am as a means of connection and growth.

My paintings are spaces where the individual and the collective meet, and where identity is not flattened, but expanded. I invite those who encounter my work to look inward, and to recognize and explore the many versions of themselves that coexist. At the same time, I encourage an outward reflection on how one’s internal layers are influenced by and are in constant relationship with others. In this space, we can then begin to understand that we are not alone in our complexities, but are rather deeply interconnected within the fabric of human existence.
